The importance of Make-a-Wish

In 1989, the life of a close friend of mine, Myra, changed overnight when her five-year-old daughter, Carly, was diagnosed with cancer of the middle ear.

With three other children at home—the youngest just seven weeks old—and a small business to run, life became a relentless cycle of hospital admissions, treatment and travelling to Melbourne. There was very little room for anything else.

Carly’s story needs to be shared because her family’s experience is not unique.

Across Australia, more than 18,000 children are living with a life-threatening illness. Behind every statistic is a child, a family and a life that has been turned upside down.

And this is where Make-A-Wish comes in.

A wish doesn't change the diagnosis. It doesn't make the treatment disappear. But it can change what a child and their family experience along the way.

It brings moments of excitement, anticipation, laughter and hope. It gives children something wonderful to look forward to—and families the chance to create memories together that aren't about hospitals, appointments or treatment.

Following Carly’s wish, Myra worked tirelessly to establish a local Make-A-Wish branch so that other children and families in our community could experience that same magic.

I was incredibly privileged to be one of the people involved in granting some of those wishes. I saw first-hand the joy they brought—not only to the child, but to their parents, siblings, friends and everyone fortunate enough to be part of the journey.

That is why I am supporting Make-A-Wish Australia.

And that is why I’m asking you to help me bring hope, joy and a little magic to children living with critical illness.
