My First Marathon at the age of 17
At just 17, tackling a marathon might seem like an ill-advised endeavor, initially not on my radar for the year. My aspirations were modest: breaking the 20-minute barrier for a 5 km run and hitting under 45 minutes for a 10 km race. But life's twists and turns led me from sprinting to steadily increasing my weekly mileage from 30 to 80 kilometers. The idea of embarking on 50 days of consecutive half marathons wasn't even a blip on my radar until I found inspiration in Sean Bell's epic run around Australia, all in support of the Make-A-Wish foundation.
Until I hit the 35 km mark, the notion of a marathon seemed deceptively simple. Then, reality set in, and every fiber of my being cried out in protest. Yet, driven by sheer determination, I pressed on, regardless of the toll it exacted. As I finally crossed the finish line, a wave of doubt that had plagued my mind dissipated, replaced by resounding congratulations and unwavering support from my run club. Hearing the heartfelt pride in the voices of my peers as I completed my first marathon at such a tender age was nothing short of extraordinary.
The euphoria that washed over me in the aftermath was unparalleled, a testament to accomplishing a monumental feat that many wouldn't even dream of attempting.
